Phonics Learning 

 

Use this page to follow our phonics and SPAG learning at home. We will post learning and ideas for Class 1 and Class 2 as regularly as possible.

Week 5 (wb 29.6.20)

We will be spending 20 minutes a day on our phonics/SPAG learning. After this we will be reading a book to consolidate our learning. You can use the Oxford Reading Tree website to access our school reading books as ‘eBooks’.

Phonics Class 1

In phonics this week we are reading these tricky words:

do      when      out      what   

 

We are learning to spell these tricky words:

my         her

 

We are also going to be reading and writing the high frequency words and reading the sentences that Mrs Shaw has uploaded to tapestry.

 

Phonics Class 2

In phonics this week we are recapping all of the phonics sounds. We are saying the sounds, reading words with the sounds in, playing some ‘phonics play’ games and writing some sentences that include words with these sounds in.

We are then carrying on with these new sounds and spelling rules:

*’ear’ as ‘air’ sound – bear

*’ph’ and ‘wh’ sounds. EG: dolphin and when

*The ‘k’ sound is spelt as ‘k’ rather than as ‘c’ before e, i and y. EG: skin, kent, kit

*Compound words are two words joined together. Each part of the longer word is spelt as it would be if it were on its own. EG: toothbrush, butterfly, earthquake.

 

We will read words with each new sound in and then write words and sentences with the sounds in.

 

We are also recapping our phase 5 tricky words:

don’t     day     here     old     house     made     saw     I’m     about  came    very     by     your     make     time

We are reading the words, writing the words and timing ourselves to see how many times we can write the word in a minute!

 

SPAG Class 2

Our SPAG learning will recap the Year 1 and Year 2 common exception words. Can you read them, write them and put them into sentences?  

 

 

Week 4 (wb 22.6.20)

We will be spending 20 minutes a day on our phonics/SPAG learning. After this we will be reading a book to consolidate our learning. You can use the Oxford Reading Tree website to access our school reading books as ‘eBooks’.

Phonics Class 1

In phonics this week we are reading these tricky words:

were      there      little      one    

 

We are learning to spell these tricky words:

they      all      are

 

Mrs Shaw has also added some phase 4 words and sentences to tapestry.  

 

Phonics Class 2

In phonics this week we are recapping all of the phonics sounds. We are saying the sounds, reading words with the sounds in, playing some ‘phonics play’ games and writing some sentences that include words with these sounds in.

We are then carrying on with these new sounds:

*o as a – eg: want, wash, was

*g as j sound – eg: gem, giant

*ea as e – eg: head, bread, read.

*ore – eg: more, score, shore, wore

*tch – eg: catch, fetch.

*ve at the end of words – eg: have, live

We will read words with each new sound in and then write words and sentences with the sounds in.

 

We are also recapping our phase 5 tricky words:

We are reading the words, writing the words and timing ourselves to see how many times we can write the word in a minute!

 

SPAG Class 2

Our SPAG learning will recap our learning from this year. We will look at different types of punctuation and use it in sentences.

 

Can you use a full stop, a comma, a capital letter, a question mark and an exclamation mark? Try to write some sentences that include these different types of punctuation.

 

Week 3 (wb 15.6.20)

We will be spending 20 minutes a day on our phonics/SPAG learning. After this we will be reading a book to consolidate our learning. You can use the Oxford Reading Tree website to access our school reading books as ‘eBooks’.

Phonics Class 1

In phonics this week we are recapping these trigraphs:  

air      ure      ear      igh

We are saying the sounds, reading words with the sounds in, playing some ‘phonics play’ games and writing some sentences that include words with these sounds in.

We are also learning these phase 4 tricky words:

*Contractions. EG: do not à don’t    did not à didn’t      he will à he’ll

Can you show some different contractions?

*The ‘or’ sound spelt ‘ar’ after w. EG: warm, ward, war, wardrobe, towards.

*The ‘sh’ sound spelt ‘s’. EG: Asia, treasure, vision, measure.

*The sh’ sound spelt ‘ch’. EG: chef, quiche, parachute, machine.

* The sound (‘or’) spelt as ‘a’ before l and ll.  EG: fall, call, wall, ball.

*The ‘u’ sound spelt ‘o’. EG: mother, brother other, nothing.

*The ‘ee’ sound spelt ‘ey’. EG: donkey, monkey, key, valley.

*The ‘o’ sound spelt ‘a’ after w or qu. EG: squash, wash, watch, quarrel.
