Forces in action

This week in science, we have been looking at different forces in action. We have learnt about;

  • pushing
  • pulling
  • gravity
  • friction
  • upthrust
  • air resistance

Which car will need the greatest force (push/pull) to move?

Why do you think that?

In groups, we set up an experiment to test our theories. 

Here is one group's findings.

Prediction: It will take more force to move on a rough surface


  • A toy car
  • 3 rubber bands
  • sellotape
  • a pencil
  • a ruler
  • different surfaces

Method: attach an elastic band to the front of the car using tape, we then used a pencil to pull the band and measure how far it stretched before the car moved.

To make it a fair test, things we kept the same (Controlled variables)  

  • the car
  • the same elastic bands
  •  and where we measured from

Conclusion: We found out that it takes more force to move the car on rougher surfaces.
