Weekly blog by William and Beth

Ancient Greek artists created paintings and sculptures, but one of their most famous inventions is the black and orange decorated pot. These were both practical objects that could be used for wine or water, and beautiful works of art. In Class 3 we have started the process of making our very own Ancient Greek pots.

First we divided the clay into two pieces, one was bigger for the pot the other piece was then split into two to make the handles. We used our hands to make a circle shape of the clay, then we used our thumbs to push a hole in the middle of the clay and create a bowl shape. We also used our fingers, rolling pins and carving utensils to create our pottery models.

Once our pottery has dried we will then paint it in traditional colours. Ancient Greeks generally used the colours black and orange to paint their pots, so when we paint our designs those are the colours we will use. We will also try to recreate traditional patterns and paintings to make them look authentic.

Our favourite part of pottery

William: “My favourite part was helping other people to make their Greek pots.”

Beth: “It was messy and lots of fun!”

Thank you so much to William and Beth for taking part in Class 3’s blog.
